πŸ‘€ Human Handoff Node

Purpose

The Human Handoff node transfers the conversation from the automated assistant to a live human agent. It's a terminal node β€” the bot conversation ends here and a real person takes over.

Business Scenario

Use the Human Handoff node when you need to:

  • Escalate complex issues β€” questions the AI can't answer or situations requiring human judgement
  • Handle complaints β€” sensitive matters that need a personal touch
  • Close sales β€” transfer warm leads to your sales team
  • Provide VIP service β€” route high-value customers directly to agents
  • Create a safety net β€” always give customers the option to talk to a person

Configuration

Field Description
Title Internal name (e.g., "Transfer to Support")
Handoff Message The message sent to the customer before transferring (e.g., "Connecting you to a team member. Please hold…")
Agent Group Optional. The target queue or group name in your helpdesk (e.g., "support", "sales", "billing")

Properties

Property Type Required Default Description
title Text No "" Internal node name
handoffMessage Text Yes "Connecting you to a human agent…" Message sent before transfer
agentGroup Text No β€” Target agent queue/group

Inputs

Handle Type Description
Top (↑) Target Receives a connection from any preceding node

Outputs

None. Human Handoff is a terminal node β€” there are no outgoing connections.

Terminal Node

Once the conversation is handed off, automated replies are paused for that customer and the agent handles the conversation from this point.

What Happens After a Handoff

Every handoff creates a work item in the Action Center with its own ticket reference:

  1. The customer receives your handoff message, and automated replies are paused for that conversation.
  2. A ticket appears in the Action Center work queue, where your team can assign it to an agent, filter by My Queue, add internal notes, and see the full activity history.
  3. When the agent completes the handoff, the assistant automatically resumes for that customer β€” no keyword or manual reset needed.

Handoffs can also come from the assistant itself

Besides this node, a customer can reach a human via the Question node's recovery menu (Talk to Human, shown after repeated invalid input). Those handoffs land in the same Action Center queue.

Connection Rules

  • βœ… Can receive connections from any node type
  • ❌ No outgoing connections β€” the conversation ends here (no "dead end" warning)
  • βœ… Multiple nodes can connect to a single Human Handoff (common pattern)

Best Practices

  • βœ… Write a reassuring handoff message β€” let the customer know help is coming.
  • βœ… Set expectations β€” mention typical wait times if possible (e.g., "You'll be connected within 2 minutes.").
  • βœ… Use Agent Groups to route to the right team β€” sales leads to sales, complaints to support.
  • βœ… Always offer Human Handoff as a menu option β€” customers should never feel trapped by the bot.
  • βœ… Place at the end of escalation paths β€” after AI Chat fails or after capturing complaint details.

Common Mistakes

Mistake What Happens Fix
No handoff message Customer sees nothing before transfer Add a clear handoff message
Handoff is unreachable Customers can never reach an agent Ensure it's connected to a menu option or fallback path
Wrong agent group name Handoff goes to the wrong queue or fails Verify the group name matches your helpdesk configuration
Using handoff as the only response Every question goes to an agent Add AI Chat or FAQ responses first; use handoff as a last resort
